I going to talk on three points – a) difference between PG and UG study b) Regarding learning and teaching and b) Environment of our department. May Allah swt give me taufiq.

2. First of all I like to mention some basic differences between undergraduate and postgraduate  education specially in medical science. In undergraduate courses, the students are raw and fresh without any background knowledge of the subject and teachers teaches them everything like starting from A,B,C,  There is a wide gap of  qualification between teachers and students viz HSC Vs M.Phil.

On the other hand, PG students have background knowledge of the subject and many of them may have in depth theoretical knowledge. Qualification gap between teachers and students is narrow viz  MBBS vs MPhil. In PG courses the learning process is self learning. Students will have to play active role and teachers play a passive role. The teacher is the guide or supervisor. Very often I give an example, in PG courses instead of giving fishes we give fishing net and teach them fishing techniques and inform them about fishing areas.  However, in this modern era of information technology (IT) source is very open and at the finger tip. I firmly believe many of our students have in depth knowledge on many topics of the subject, particularly students doing  research/thesis  in particular field. So any one can ask about s the importance of teacher in PG courses.  Actually PG students learn practical things from teachers. They will share their theoretical knowledge with the practical experience of teacher. Sharing of experience with knowledge and current information will make learning process very interesting and  foundations of learning becomes very strong.

3. Now I shall a few words about learning and teaching. As I said I am a good orator, so I will use valuable quotations of learned people of different ages. We all know the first teacher for mankind was Allah swt himself, because he taught our father hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) the names (i.e. information) of everything  and that knowledge made mankind superior to Angels and they were instructed to prostrate Adam (PUH). Subsequently Messengers of Allah swt  were the teachers of mankind teaching them religious as well as practical things of life.. The word professor has some relationship with prophecy i.e. prophet and Definition of professor is ‘One who professed, or makes open declaration of, his sentiments or opinions; especially, one who makes a public avowal of his belief in the Scriptures and his faith in Christ, and thus unites himself to the visible church.

There is Chinese proverb “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. “

Greek Philosopher Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC)  a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great  rightly said  “Teachers deserved more honour  than parents who merely gave them birth; for bare life is furnished by the one, the other ensures a good life”. and his student Alexander of Macedon said “ I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.”

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 1 BCE – CE 65) major philosophical figure of the Roman Imperial Period  said “Men learn while they teach”

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas (619 A.D- 687 AD) (RA) ( was great Islamic scholar and cousin of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (sallahu alahi ua sallam) known as "the learned man of this Ummah"..He used to stay outside the house of other Sahabi to know some of prophetic Hadiths but never used knock the door. There are many examples like these regarding their dealing with their teachers.

There is famous story of Hazrat Abu Hanifa (699 — 767) (Rahmatullah Alaihi) who learned something from a Cobbler and he used to show respect that cobbler  always even when he very famous scholar.

Jeremy Taylor (1613 –1667) was a cleric in the Church of England who said  “To be proud of learning, is the greatest ignorance”.

Voltaire (1694-1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher famous for his wit and for his advocacy of civil liberties, nicely said  “The more I read, the more I acquire, the more certain I am that I know nothing.”

Benjamin Franklin (1706  – 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat has a very practical quote on learning  “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”

Henri Frédéric Amiel (1821 –1881) was a Swiss philosopher, poet and critic said “To know how to suggest is the art of teaching “

Bertrand Russel (1872 – 1970) a British Philosopher and Noble laureate (1950) in literature said “No man can be a good teacher unless be has feelings of warm affection towards his pupils and a genuine desire to impart to them what he himself believes to be of value.”

Sir William Osler, 1st Baronet (1849 –1919) was a Canadian physician. He was one of the "Big Four" founding professors at Johns Hopkins Hospital as the first Professor of Medicine and founder of the Medical Service there, has been called the "Father of modern medicine” He was a multifaceted physician and individual, functioning as a pathologist, internist, educator, bibliophile, historian, author, and renowned practical joker. Said a nice saying about teacher “The successful teacher is no longer on a height, pumping knowledge at high pressure into passive receptacles..He is a senior student anxious to help his juniors.”

Lastly I would like to quote from Kahlil Gibran a famous Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer (1883 -  1931), His famous book in English was “Prophet” is the third best-selling book of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu. These quotation I got from one of my students letter  while I was studying in London as Commonwealth medical fellow. Inspired by this quotation I traced the book and found a real treasure. So this is an example how we learn from our students.

Then said a teacher, "Speak to us of Teaching."

And he said:

No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of our knowledge.

The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness.

If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.

The astronomer may speak to you of his understanding of space, but he cannot give you his understanding.

The musician may sing to you of the rhythm which is in all space, but he cannot give you the ear which arrests the rhythm nor the voice that echoes it.

For the vision of one man lends not its wings to another man.

Now I will give some suggestions to my beloved students

·     You must have due respect and love from your heart for all the teachers, even for technologist who will some time teach you some techniques. There is verse in Holy Quran Surah Ar Rahman the meaning of which  “ is the reward of goodness aught save goodness? ( (55:60)

·      From my  40 years of experience (20 years as active student and 20 years as active teacher) I observed that obedient student always acquire more knowledge from their teachers even with average caliber. And  many talent students  could not learn or benefitted very much without respect and love for their teacher. Sometimes you will know  many a things more/ in depth or different from your teacher because science is changing every day and we may not always  updated. In those cases you have to share your latest information very politely with your teachers.. Our faculty members are very open minded and accepts knowledge from any reliable source.

·     As I said before in the famous quotes “we learn by teaching” is a very practical thing. Our learned colleagues not involved in PG teaching in other medical Colleges are less updated the us.

·      A man with Knowledge is always very humble and never arrogant because he knows there are many things to be learned. The term difficult and easy are also very relative term the moment you know something is easiest thing in the world and until you know it remains as  most difficult thing. So, never mark anything as difficult or easy.

3. I am going to conclude my lengthy speech by saying a few words regarding the environment of this department. This department is very student friendly.  Our faculty members are very cordial and friendly, our supporting staff are also good. Very often we call this is our 2nd home. We share our  joy and sorrow. We celebrate our various personal and familial occasions in the department. Get together of all family members and sometimes going out for excursion are  regular events. Our M.Phil students always contribute for the development of the department and once some one gets admitted in the M.Phil courses become lifetime member of this family. However, though very much friendly standard or quality of course or teaching is never compromised. We have collaborations with many institutes of home and aboard like Sapporo of Medical University of Japan, Ghent University of Belgium, BAU, BIRDEM, ICDDR,B. We try to offer our best hospitality and we try to treat all academic events (like examinations, academic visits) as socio academic  events which is also appreciated by people from home and abroad.

I have taken much time. Now I am going to conclude my speech with my favorite sayings that firmly believe and try to practice  in my life.

Eid Mubarak in advance. .

To be your best self

To change your world, you must change yourself.
To blame and complain will only make matters worse.

Whatever you care about, is your responsibility.
What you see in others, shows you yourself.
See the best in others, and you will be your best.

Give to others, and you give to yourself.
Appreciate beauty, and you will be beautiful.
Admire creativity, and you will be creative.

Love, and you will be loved.
Seek to understand, and you will be understood.
Listen, and your voice will be heard.

Teach, and you will learn.

Show your best face to the mirror,

and you'll be happy with the face looking back at you.
